What’s new at ACI: An update on ACI codes and strategic directions
Dr. Juenger will introduce ACI’s 2024 Strategic Plan emphasizing global engagement, sustainability and resilience, dissemination of knowledge, and more. It provides an update on major revisions to American Concrete Institute codes and standards, highlighting their global significance for engineering practice, particularly: ACI 318-25 (Structural Concrete) with new sustainability appendix and performance-based wind design; two entirely new codes – ACI-PCI 319-25 (Structural Precast Concrete) and ACI-PTI 320-25 (Post-Tensioned Concrete); the groundbreaking ACI 323-24 (Low-Carbon Concrete) targeting global warming potential reduction; and the extensively revised ACI 562-25 (Concrete Repair) with new reliability-based assessment methods. The presentation also highlights ACI's PLUS digital platform for interactive code access and emphasizes how these developments will influence international standards, particularly for engineers working on global projects where sustainability, specialized concrete technologies, and performance-based design approaches are increasingly important.
Dr. Maria Juenger is a Professor and Ernest Cockrell, Jr. Centennial Chair in Engineering #2 in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Juenger’s teaching and research focus on materials used in civil engineering applications, with an emphasis on chemical issues in cement-based materials. Dr. Juenger is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and currently serves as President of ACI. Dr. Juenger received her B.S. degree in Chemistry and Spanish from Duke University and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University. After completing her Ph.D., she was a postdoctoral researcher in Civil Engineering at the University at California, Berkeley before coming to the University of Texas at Austin.
